We love lumberjacks, and we’re okay!

With the amazing new Sea to Sky Gondola, the Squamish Valley Music Festival, the booming film industry, and our reputation as the Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada, it’s hard to believe that Squamish was a town built on heavy industry. Forestry dominated our economy for over half a century, and was one of the main forces that allowed the town of Squamish to grow and thrive. Today, the pulp mill has closed and the most visible signs of logging are the logging trucks that drive through town, but Squamish locals are committed to celebrating our roots, and one of the town’s biggest events does this well. The Loggers Sports Days festival is a four day celebration of the quirky characteristics of Squamish, and our history as a logging town. This festival has many free events, and is great fun for families and athletes alike.
We love having the Squamish Days Loggers Sports Festival over the August long weekend. While most people in the province celebrate B.C. Day with campfires and s’mores, we celebrate with axe throwing, log rolling, bed races, and a few s’mores thrown in for good measure. Some of the events may seem cheesy, but the Loggers Sports athletes are serious. Their skills range from climbing and descending 80 foot poles in less than 20 seconds, chopping down trees with speed and enough accuracy to hit a small peg, and maintaining their balance while rolling on a 12 to 15 inch log and trying to knock their competitor off their own log. This weekend promises lots of fun, great entertainment, and many opportunities to enjoy the beautiful weather, the mountain culture, and Squamish’s colourful logging history.
